Can Laptop Battery Cells Be Changed?

Laptop batteries, such as Sony VGP BPS2 battery (battery for Sony VAIO VGN-S/FS/FJ/SZ series notebooks), as we know are battery packs made with several battery cells. If our laptop battery does not work and we would like to repair it, we can find a cell replacing service that only cost around $20-$40. It looks very worth since a new original laptop batteries always make you spend a lot. Take Sony VGP-BPS2A Li-Ion laptop battery for example, if you purchase a Genuine OEM item, you have to pay at least $150 for it. But is it really good to change battery cells?

It’s very simple to change battery cells because there are just some series and parallel battery cells inside the laptop battery. However, the battery protection board cannot be replaced. The battery protection board in a Sony VGN BPS2 laptop battery is added secret information when it’s in the factory, and so is every laptop battery. Whenever replacing battery cells, it needs appropriate debugging shield of protection features so that the replacement of battery won’t be failed.

Besides, if we only replace some battery cells, there will be internal resistance between new and old battery cells.  The resistance will make the efficiency of your laptop battery pack drop a lot, and the battery life will have a significant impact as well. So, when our laptop batteries dead, what should we do? The warranty of laptop batteries is always 1 year, and laptop battery life is around 1-2 years. If the battery doesn’t work in the warranty period, just ask the supplier for a warranty replacement. If it’s out of warranty, you can consider buying a new battery for your laptop. Nowadays, many aftermarket laptop batteries can reach OEM batteries, and cost only one-third or one-fourth of the original batteries, and there’s one year warranty as well. The most important is that do not let cell-changed battery damages your expensive laptop!
